Santa is on the move…

In the first week of December I put up my Christmas Tree and inside decorations with my daughter Nikky and also put up my 3 metre inflatable waving Santa outside with my son Merv and his girlfriend Toni with the help of Mike too.

In the lead up, right up until just before Christmas Eve my Santa moved all around the outside of my house and sometimes even on his own.

I came home one day and found him trying to get back to the North Pole and only hanging on by one rope.

Due to the wind he was moved by Nikky, Merv, Mike and myself but I can say that he is safely deflated and back in his box ready again for next year.

Keep the kids occupied these school holidays and take them to a show

It’s school holidays time again and it’s also Show Time!

Why not take the kids to the Perth Royal Show. Starting on Saturday 27th October and running until Saturday 4th October held at the Claremont show ground, the Royal Show has a lot to offer the small kids and the big kids at heart.

With baby animals, rides, entertainment, food and showbags it really is a fun day for the whole family and guess what? Thanks to the State Government, kids 12 and under are free when a full priced adult ticket is purchased.

Jump online the website and get your tickets to miss the lines.

If the Royal Show is not your thing did you know that the Circus is in town?

Sorrento Living Circus Joseph Ashton 01

Circus Joseph Ashton has just laid down their pegs and pitched their tent at Percy Doyls Reserve in Duncraig. With acrobats, bareback riders, performing animals, clowns and trapeze artists going to the circus is something kids of all sizes should see.

School Holidays are over but here is somewhere you can take this kids next holidays

School has now gone back after 2 weeks off, although I’m sure most mum’s and dad’s are happy for the peace and quiet again but I bet you ran out of things to do to keep them occupied. Well keep this in mind for the next school holidays.

How about a fun day out for the whole family that’s an entertaining, affordable and educational experience.

Well why not head to the Hillary’s Marina and visit the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre (NMDC) where you can explore Western Australia’s oceans and rivers through vibrant displays and interactive exhibits. You can even get up close and personal to some local marine life at their rock pool, touch table and aquariums.

The NMDC has all major facilities including a gift shop, cafe, disability access and ample parking for cars and buses.

Open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays), tickets are just $7 for adults and $4 for kids aged 4-15.

Go to the NMDC website for more information or to download some activities to keep the kiddies occupied during the wet winters days when going outside is just not an option.

Winter exercise for dogs Fun and fitness for dogs in colder weather

Here’s some help with your pet during the winter from the team at Top Dog Minders

When the weather starts to cool down it’s good to make sure the exercise routine you have with your pet doesn’t go out the window. This is especially important for owners of pets with arthritis as a regular program of gentle exercise during the colder months can actually help with joint health and mobility.

The weather is no excuse as there is a wide variety of winter pet-wear available these days to suit any style and budget. Depending on where you live and your dogs’ breed and age, their winter woollies might range from a light raincoat or jumper right up to a fleecy jacket and boots to protect their sensitive paw pads from the frost.

Tips for picking a dog coat

  • To ensure your pet’s new coat will fit snugly, selecting the correct size is crucial. Measure your dog before heading out to buy a coat. This measurement should be taken from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
  • Picking the right coat for your dog’s breed, age and the weather conditions is key. A thick coated Shepherd may only need a light coat to beat the chill but an older Chihuahua may need a thicker and fleecier coat to feel comfortable.

When outside games aren’t an option

  • Scattering your dogs kibble throughout the house is a great way to get your dog up, about and using their nose. It also has the added benefit of encouraging natural foraging behaviour and has your dog burning calories as they eat!
  • Rolling your dog’s ball down the hallway and playing hide and seek with your dog are other great ways to get your dog moving and nurturing the bond you have at the same time.
  • When you are at home, encourage your dog to follow you around the house while you are doing your housework by carrying around your dog’s favourite toy and a few treats.

Dry skin and shedding

Low humidity and sitting in front of a heater can be a common cause of dry skin and shedding. Frequent brushing helps remove dead hairs, skin and stimulates the oil glands.

Heaters and fireplaces

Space heaters and oil heaters should only be used when you can supervise your pet. They can inflict burns to your pet if they get too close and can cause fires if knocked over by an energetic play session. If you have a fireplace make sure you use a screen to protect your pet from sparks.

Exercise the mind too

Winter is often a great time to get involved with training classes such as obedience, agility and even flyball. In some cases 10 minutes of focused training can equal nearly one hours walk!

Most of all get out there and enjoy the winter weather together – the happy look on your dog’s face when they are powering down the road in their winter attire will make it all worth it!
